Multidirectional Verbs in the Past Tense
In the past tense, the verbs ходи́л, е́здил can be used to talk about a single round trip that the subject made. When the forms ходит́ь, езди́ть are in the past and refer to a single round-trip, these verbs become virtual synonyms of быть in the past tense. Although similar in meaning, the forms ходи́л, е́здил go with destinational phrases, while был requires with locational ones.

| Я сего́дня был на вы́ставке. (I was at an exhibit.) |
